The Elephant and the Sparrow

Story 10 Friends Apart 2 min read Ages 3–10

A sparrow built her nest on a big tree. One day a wild elephant broke the branch, and her eggs were lost.

The sparrow cried. Her friends came: a woodpecker, a fly and a frog.

"We will help you," they said. "We are small, but we are many."

The fly buzzed in the elephant's ear until he shut his eyes. Then the woodpecker gently pecked and made them itch.

The elephant was thirsty and could not see. The frog croaked from far away, near a deep muddy pit.

The elephant followed the sound, slipped into the mud, and learned to be gentle with small creatures.
