The Cat's Judgment
A partridge went travelling, and while he was away a hare moved into his nest.
When the partridge came home they argued. "It was empty!" "It was mine!"
"Let us ask the holy cat by the river," said the hare. "He prays all day."
The cat sat very still with his eyes half closed and spoke in a gentle voice.
"I am old and deaf," he purred. "Come closer, dear friends, and tell me again."
The wise old birds in the tree called out a warning, and both animals ran home just in time.
Do not let a stranger settle your quarrel just because he speaks sweetly.
