A tortoise watched the hares racing across the field and wished he could run like that.
He left his cool pond and tried to race on the hot dry ground.
He was slow, he was tired, and the sun burned his shell all afternoon.
A hare stopped and said kindly, "You know, I cannot swim at all."
The tortoise had never thought of that before.
He went back to his water, where he could glide like a shadow, and was glad.
