The Donkey in the Tiger Skin

Story 65 Losing What You Won 2 min read Ages 3–10

A washerman had a hungry donkey and very little food to give him.

So he threw an old tiger skin over the donkey and let him into the farmers' fields at night.

The farmers saw the stripes in the dark and ran away, and the donkey ate his fill.

Night after night he grew fatter and prouder inside his borrowed skin.

Then one night he heard another donkey braying far away, and he could not help answering.

Hee-haw! The farmers came back at once with sticks, and the donkey ran home with nothing.
