The Deer Who Forgot to Look
A young deer was the fastest runner in the whole forest, and he knew it.
"Nothing can catch me," he said, and he stopped watching where he was going.
He ran through the meadow with his head high and his eyes on the clouds.
One afternoon he ran straight into a hunter's rope and was held fast.
His old mother came and gently chewed him free before the hunter returned.
"Speed is a gift," she said. "Looking where you go is a habit. You need both."
Being good at something does not mean you can stop paying attention.
